As weather doesn't permit some outside works, it's possible to spend some time and write something on the web.
Weather forecast promised that rain will stop falling tomorrow, so we will have couple of days of sun, with higher temperatures. Sure, it will give opportunity to do some work at location, because there are still many things which has to be done there before next contests (as usual).

More or less, I started to thinking about remote operation on the bands from home before some three years ago. Plenty of ideas, but no experience with this area at all, it was really interesting period. But, as time was passing, google helped a lot with getting some idea what to do and how to use it. As there were already some hardware stuff on my location which can be used for this purpose, we started with improving the rest of it to be able to use location from anywhere in the world.

Last time I did this one seriously in Single op/Mixed high power category was back in year 2002. So, exactly ten years. Actually, I've worked the contest during last four years as part of national HQ team, but it is really different approach when you have to operate as single op. Thanks to 9A9T, I was able to operate SO2R, as he borrowed me radio and amp for 2nd radio. And, with big help of 9A9HI and 9A5LUG, I was able to install air-condition system in the shack, which made a big difference when you operate in the contest during summertime.

As IARU HF Championship contest was approaching fast, we have to finish tower works before this one. WPX CW 2012 was done without 10m antenna. That wasn't a big problem, because in WPX multipliers are counted only once, not per band/mode. But, in IARU HFC, things are getting more complicated because multipliers are counted per band. So, 10m antenna was "a must" for this one. Initially, plan was to put up antenna during mid June, but we had some period of two-three weeks of high temperatures during second part of June, so, all work was postponed for a week before the contest in July. And we were lucky, because temperature was for some 10 degrees lower, but some rain during that week, brings as some problems with mosquitoes.
I suppose that you already guess it, but as usual, we finished tower work during the evening hours at Friday, less than a day before the contest start. Now, 5 element 10m yagi is on the tower, just bellow 15m yagi. Unfortunately, something went wrong with design, and resonant frequency is quite high, at 28.7 MHz. This should be corrected during July, before EU HF contest, no time to fix this before IARU HFC. |
